Objective:

The theme of the 9th Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum is “Intellectual Property and Soft Power of Cities”. The soft power of a city is the ability to attract outside talents, funds & other resources and to raise its own development potential, based on its culture, system, brand image and qualities of talents.

In recent years, soft power has been viewed as important as hard power for the development of cities’ competitiveness. City leaders used to place much emphasis on hard power, for example GDP and infrastructure building. Now it becomes clear that soft power, such as capability for innovation, cultural environment and management mechanisms, is also the key element of regional development. For a modern city like Shanghai, soft power and hard power are of equal importance to gain its competitive edge.

The soft power of a city is closely related to its IP development. The IP system safeguards the cultural evolution, brand building and technological innovation. This year, the Forum will explore the connections between IP and soft power of cities through academic exchanges, experience sharing, reasoning and discussions. By studying best practices of cities both home and abroad, it will help provide more references and solutions to the sustainable development and soft power building for cities in China including Shanghai.
